Beginning in the summer of 2009 as a once a week basic lunch of sandwiches and sweet peaches, the Primo Plato/ First Plate Program has transformed into a daily full lunch program at five sites a week, all year long.
Travelling daily with our exceptional partner, Children Youth and Family Services (CYFS) through their community based program called Early Learning Program through Family Connection, The PB&J Fund’s Primo Plato Program provides 75-90 weekly meals to mothers and their pre-school aged children after engaging in play-based school readiness activities. Chef Courtenay and our Nutritionist Alicia plan economical menus to teach young moms creative ways to use produce while introducing them to new types of whole grains and seasonings.
Cooking demonstrations and food giveaways comprise another component to Primo Plato; rotating one site per week, Chef Courtenay teaches the parents basic culinary skills to use at home. Providing both food and the building block for success at home, these daily meals ensure their children’s “first plate” or primo plato, to be healthful one.Are you ready to start cooking?
