Join the PB&J Family to Make a Difference in your Community!
Volunteers are an essential part of PB&J’s culinary and nutritional programming and food distribution activities. Volunteers increase our organizational capacity through their investment of time and energy, but the real magic happens in the relationships that are formed with youth and families.
Volunteers from UVA’s Madison House and the community at large generously donate their time to support our cooking classes by helping with setup, preparation of recipes and classroom supervision, and cleanup.
Opportunities include volunteering in our Kitchen during classes, supporting our annual Holiday Giving program and performing unpaid internships in support of school learning service requirements.
Due to the relational nature of our volunteers working closely with youth and/or families, we typically ask for a minimum commitment of one 6-week unit at 2 hours each week.
“Such a treat to get my occasional ‘grandpa fix’…how wonderful to have the opportunity to expose the kids to what “real” food is!”John Lockney
"If you enjoy working with children and cooking, you’ll meet interesting staff and volunteers that have a strong commitment to the Charlottesville community.”JoAnn Robinson
“It’s truly been the best experience of my three years at UVA. The kids and staff are great and really give you a different perspective on life. It doesn’t feel like 'work' when you’re in the kitchen cooking with such energetic, enthusiastic people."Caroline Pham
