A PB&J Fund program

CHEF Kids is for youth participants, usually between the ages of 8 and 13. Our CHEF Kids programming is curriculum-based, with units that have a theme and gradually build on safety, culinary, mathematical and nutritional skills. Past themes include Around the World, Fast Food Makeover and Pizza, Pasta and More.

Our CHEF Kids partners include Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Central Blue Ridge, Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Virginia, City of Promise and Teens Give. Classes typically meet once per week for six weeks.

Over the summer months, we purchase locally grown produce to teach students about what is in season and to introduce them to new vegetables they may not have tried before. Through our partnership with the Charlottesville Attention Youth Internship Program (CAYIP), we introduce teens to basic culinary skills and provide them experience preparing food in local restaurants.

What our participants are saying

It’s so fun that I get to really cook!

4th grade

I love getting to cook different foods each week. They all taste so good!
Gabriel E.

3rd grade

It’s truly been the best experience of my three years at UVA. The kids and staff are great and really give you a different perspective on life. It doesn’t feel like ‘work’ when you’re in the kitchen cooking with such energetic, enthusiastic people.
